Royals: Mia Tindall spent some quality time with her father Mike this weekend, cheering him on during a charity football tournament in Gloucester. After cheering on her father from the sidelines, the eight-year-old had her own kickabout on the pitch.
The royals are an athletic bunch, with some of them, like the Duke of Cambridge, a self-confessed Aston Villa supporter, being particularly well-known for their passion for the game.
Prince William’s eldest son, Prince George, appears to be following in his father’s footsteps, as he was sighted playing football for his high school team in January 2022. Fans were also amazed when the little royal accompanied William and Kate at two England games during the Euro 2020 tournament in summer 2021, including the final at Wembley Stadium.
William and Kate, ever the competitive pair, went head-to-head on their 2019 Ireland tour as they joined a kickabout with kids.
While their father, Prince William, was competing in a charity polo match in June 2019, Prince George couldn’t resist playing a game with his younger sister, Princess Charlotte. Charlotte saw her first football match when Aston Villa took on Norwich City at their Carrow Road stadium, which is close to the Cambridges’ country home, Anmer Hall.
In May 2021, Prince William gives it his all during a visit to Spartans FC’s Ainslie Park Stadium in Edinburgh. Despite not being from the Midlands, the Duke of Edinburgh has already revealed why he supports Aston Villa, telling Gary Lineker in 2015 that his decision went back to his youth.
The Prince told the following: “I used to play a lot of football in high school. I was seeking for a club to join. All of my pals at school were either Man United or Chelsea supporters, and I didn’t want to root for mediocre sides. I wanted a team that was more in the middle of the table and could provide me with more emotional rollercoaster moments.”
He shoots, but does he get a goal? In 2002, Prince Harry takes a penalty kick in front of West Ham United’s junior squad at Upton Park.
Every Christmas, William and Harry used to play in a charity football match at the Queen’s Sandringham estate. In 2015, the royal brothers were on the same squad, competing against domestic staff.
During a visit to Newcastle United’s St James Park ground in 2006, the Prince of Wales put on his best concentration face as he took a penalty.
In May 2019, Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden demonstrated her abilities on her Province walk in Jamtland.
These were some of our favourite snaps of the royals playing football. We hope you enjoyed them.
