The elderly woman was hit by the royal motorcade in London on Tuesday afternoon and is now in critical condition. The Duchess of Edinburgh has said she is “praying” for her.
The accident, in which a police motorcycle collided with a pedestrian in Earl’s Court, happened in the late afternoon, at or about 3:21 p.m., close to the intersection of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road.
The woman was taken to a hospital by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance who responded to the scene. Her family has been informed, and her condition is still critical.
The Duchess’ “thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family,” according to Buckingham Palace.
“She is appreciative of the emergency services’ prompt response and will monitor developments,” they continued. Considering that the incident is still being investigated, further comment is not appropriate at this time.
The Duchess and her husband, Prince Edward, would have been traveling to Buckingham Palace to host a garden party when the terrible accident would have occurred.
The Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Princess Anne all attended the event with the royal couple.
8,000 people showed up for the party, which started at 4 pm on Tuesday, and they all congregated in the garden of Buckingham Palace.
Since Queen Victoria began what were known as “breakfasts” in the 1860s, although they were actually held in the afternoon, garden parties have been held at Buckingham Palace.
Following a busy weekend of coronation celebrations, which Sophie and Edward participated in and even appeared in an official portrait with the newly crowned King and Queen, the garden party was held.
The image was quickly examined by royal fans, who noticed a very sweet gesture from Sophie and her husband. Princess Alexandra is seen being quietly supported by the couple so she can stand for the picture.
One supporter commented on “the care that Sophie and Edward are taking over Princess Alexandra.” “I just adore Sophie,” a second person said. She is the epitome of elegance, kindness, and class.
“What a beautiful picture. I enjoy enlarging the image to examine each outfit’s finer details. What a laborious task! I’m not familiar with the elderly woman, but it’s wonderful to see that the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are behind her. Fantastic!” said the third.
It follows Sophie’s attendance at the coronation concert on Sunday night, when fans got to see a very different side of her.
Other royal accidents
Back in 2019, a grandmother was seriously injured after being hit by a police motorcyclist in Prince William and Catherine’s royal motorcade.
Irene Mayor, 83 at the time, was taken urgently to the hospital where she was later diagnosed as having a broken pelvis.
When the incident occurred, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were on their way to Windsor to attend the Order of the Garter ceremony with the Queen.
According to a statement from Kensington Palace at the time, William and Catherine were “deeply concerned and saddened” by the incident and reached out to Irene’s family.
The royal couple even sent Mrs. Mayor’s daughter Fiona flowers and a handwritten note, asking if she would allow them to visit the devout grandmother.
