Meghan Markle and Prince Harry break silence as Queen dies aged 96

Her Majesty the Queen’s death has prompted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to express their sorrow.

In loving memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 1926–2022, Harry and his wife Meghan shared a statement on the home page of their Archewell website. Harry, who was very close to this grandmother.

Sadly, the Queen passed away at age 96. She succeeded her father King George VI as monarch at the young age of 25, becoming Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and head of state for 70 years.

Her Majesty passed away at her Scottish estate Balmoral. A statement from the palace read: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will spend this evening and tomorrow at Balmoral before flying back to London.

In a tribute to his late mother, Prince Charles said: “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We deeply lament the loss of a beloved Mother and beloved Sovereign. I’m confident that the nation, the Realms, the Commonwealth, and a huge number of people all over the world will be devastated by her passing.

“My family and I will be comforted and sustained during this time of mourning and change by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held,” said the author.

Her Majesty has received tributes from various members of the royal family. In addition to reiterating the official statement from Buckingham Palace, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge updated their social media accounts to reflect their new titles, The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

After the news shocked the world, tributes have also poured in from world leaders.

In remembrance of a beloved Queen, whose unwavering duty and devotion to her country had seen her still at work until the age of 96, hundreds of mourners have started to assemble and lay flowers outside Buckingham Palace.

Ten days of official national mourning begin on the day of the Queen’s passing, and 30 days of court mourning will be observed by the royal households.
