During her royal tour with Prince Harry to South Africa, Meghan Markle revealed her adorable nickname for little baby Archie.
When Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was four months old, he took part in his first overseas royal engagement with his parents in September 2019.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 10-day trip is best remembered for their bombshell documentary with ITV’s Tom Bradby, in which Meghan revealed her struggles with royal life, including her famous statement that no one had asked her if she was “all right” after giving birth.
In the documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Harry admitted that he and his brother William were on “different paths.”
They did, however, participate in 20 engagements during their time in South Africa, with Harry also traveling solo to Malawi, Botswana, and Angola.
Meeting Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu and his family was one of their engagements.
As she met Mr Tutu’s daughter, Thandeka Tutu Gxashe, the Duchess was overheard calling her son “Bubba.”
Ms Tutu Gxashe addressed Archie, saying: “Oh, how lovely! Hello!” Are you prepared for the cameras?”
Meghan then attempted to elicit a response from him, saying: “Good morning, good morning, good morning, good morning, good morning, good morning, good morning, Bubba, oh bubba, oh bubba”
Meghan and Harry’s trip to South Africa appeared to be their first hint that they wanted to leave the Firm, as they announced a few months later that they were quitting as senior royals and relocating to the United States.
After establishing their Archewell brand and signing multi-million pound deals with Spotify and Netflix over the last year, they have become financially independent.
Last month, however, the couple sparked new controversy when they spoke out publicly about the Royal Family for the second time.
Harry talked about feeling trapped within the monarchy in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, while Meghan said she felt suicidal.
They also claimed that an unnamed member of the Royal Family made racist remarks about their son Archie’s skin tone before he was born, though Prime Minister William later denied the claims.
Harry visited the United Kingdom earlier this week ahead of Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday, his first visit since the interview aired.
Meghan, who is expecting her second child, stayed at home with her husband in Montecito, California, after doctors advised her not to fly.
Meghan, who is due to give birth this summer, is said to have told the family to “put their differences aside” as they mourn the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week at the age of 99.
“Meghan said her main concern right now is supporting Harry,” a source close to the Duchess told DailyMail.com.
“She stated that she would leave the decision of whether or not to attend the funeral to him.
“Meghan stated that it is at these times that family members should come together, set aside their differences, and unite as one.” She stated that she understands what Prince Philip would want and that she is willing to forgive and move on.”
On Monday, Harry paid a touching tribute to his grandfather, describing him as a “legend of banter.”
“He has been an unparalleled rock for Her Majesty The Queen, by her side for 73 years of marriage, and while I could go on, I know that right now, beer in hand, he would say to all of us, ‘Oh do get on with it!'” he said.
“My grandfather was a man of honor, service, and wit. He was genuine, with a razor-sharp wit, and he could hold the attention of any room with his charisma—and also because you never knew what he’d say next.
“As the Monarch’s longest reigning consort, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke, he will be remembered.” But, like many of you who have lost a loved one or a grandparent in the last year, he was my grandfather: master of the grill, legend of banter, and cheeky to the end.”
