The horrifying explanation for Prince Harry’s refusal to bring his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, to the UK is that he fears an acid attack.
In a recent interview with Tabloids on Trial, the youngest son of ITV King Charles stated: “Anything from a knife to acid—all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff, to act on what they have read. I won’t bring my wife back to this country because of these sincere worries of mine.”
His remarks coincide with nearly two years after Scotland Yard’s departing assistant commissioner of specialist operations, Neil Basu, claimed in a Channel 4 documentary that the two had received “disgusting and very real” threats.
Neil, who oversaw royal protection prior to the Sussexes’ departure from the United Kingdom, declared, “If you had seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it, the kind of rhetoric that’s online… you would feel under threat all of the time.”
“We sent teams to look into it. For those threats, people have been prosecuted,” he said in closing.
During the in-person interview with Rebecca Barry of ITV News, the Duke added that his intention to sue newspaper publishers contributed to “destroying the relationship” with his family.
“Yeah, that’s certainly a central piece to it,” Harry replied. “However, it’s difficult for me to respond to that question because the press attacks me mercilessly for anything I say about my family. I’ve been very clear in saying that action must be taken on this.
“It would be good if the whole family participated. Again, from a service perspective and in a public capacity, I think these are the things we ought to be doing for the greater good. But there are reasons why I’m doing this.”
In 2020, Harry relocated his family to California. The Prince and Meghan reside in Montecito with their two kids, Princess Lilibet, age three, and Prince Archie, age five.
After a judge determined that MGN engaged in “extensive” phone hacking between 2006 and 2011 and “even to some extent” during the Leveson Inquiry into media standards, he was able to settle his lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers in February 2024.
