When Prince William and Princess Kate unexpectedly showed up at the basketball game on Wednesday, they were greeted with applause.
The couple surprised onlookers on their first day in Boston when they sat courtside to watch the Boston Celtics play the Miami Heat.
The royals appeared to win over the crowd inside TD Garden despite the start of their tour being somewhat overshadowed by Lady Susan Hussey’s “unacceptable” comments, although booing could be heard as they were introduced by a stadium announcer.
In order to learn more about how some Bostonians felt about William and Kate attending the game, we spoke with HELLO Royal !’s Correspondent Emily Nash, who was there that evening.
There was a “sort of mixed reaction to them [at the basketball],” according to Emily. “But I believe a large part of it was due to Boston’s pride in its Irish immigrant heritage. So, you know, it makes sense that not everyone will be overly thrilled to see members of the British royal family.”
She goes on: “But overall, I’d say it was a very cordial welcome. And a lot of people, I believe, weren’t initially aware of who was present. People were quite surprised to see the royals and were sort of saying, “Oh, look, you know, the royals were here,” as we were leaving. So keep in mind that this is a major event for the city in any case.”
Nevertheless, William and Kate appeared to be having a good time at the gathering. “As we all know, William and Kate are avid athletes. They enjoy some friendly competition, “Noted by Emily “They appear to be asking many questions, watching everything that is happening, and getting to know some of the players. They were in for the first few quarters and ended up staying for the entire game, so I think they had a great night.”
