The Duchess of Sussex has remained in Montecito

Why Meghan Markle didn’t travel to the UK with husband Prince Harry

After learning of her father-in-law King Charles’ startling cancer diagnosis on Monday night, Meghan Markle did not accompany her husband Prince Harry on a Tuesday visitation.

While some fans of the royal family might be perplexed as to why the Duchess opted to remain in Montecito, Meghan made the decision to stay in the US after learning of the family’s news for a number of reasons.

Meghan probably wanted to stay at home and spend time with their kids, Archie and Lilibet, before having to be away from them. The couple is scheduled to travel to Vancouver next week to commemorate a year until Prince Harry’s Invictus Games take place in Canada.

When Meghan made her stage debut at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf last year, she previously disclosed that she enjoys going on school runs with her children.

She expressed regret for being late and gave an explanation, saying, “I just had to spend a little bit more time at home getting our little ones settled, getting milkshakes, and doing school drop off.”

She probably wants her kids to continue to feel like normal people. It’s unclear if they have been informed of their grandfather’s diagnosis, but considering the fact that Harry has visited the UK in the past—for instance, staying with Archie and Lilibet during the King’s Coronation in May of last year—it seems likely that they have.

Additionally, Meghan’s choice to remain at home might have something to do with Harry’s last-minute overseas trip. It might have been thought that disrupting the kids’ daily routine for a brief trip was not worth it, given that the Duke’s meeting with his father lasted less than an hour.

“We know that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are both hands-on parents, and Meghan will want to keep disruptions to Archie and Lilibet’s routine to a minimum at this difficult time,” commented Danielle Stacey, our royal correspondent. The Duchess not only mentioned doing the school run in Germany last year, but she also mentioned doing it with Archie in an interview with The Cut in 2022. It goes without saying that she will want to be present to support her young children while Harry is in the UK. The Sussexes won’t want to spend a lot of time apart from their kids because they are also scheduled to visit Canada this month.

Harry arrived in the UK on Tuesday morning, having left Los Angeles on Monday night. After that, he went directly to Clarence House and met with his father for a short while.

Not just the Prince traveled on Tuesday to see His Majesty; other family members also went. After Charles’ diagnosis was made public, Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, were seen visiting him.
