On Saturday, Prince William and Duchess Kate paid a touching tribute to Prince Philip on social media, marking the first anniversary of his death.
Prince William and Duchess Kate took to Twitter to share a touching video montage of the late Duke, which the Queen had originally posted. Her Majesty’s life with Philip was highlighted in the clip, which included the birth of their children and their wedding day.
“Remembering The Duke of Edinburgh on the first anniversary of his death,” the royal couple wrote alongside the post.
Prince Charles also shared three sweet photos of his late father, including a rare childhood photo of Philip pushing Charles and his younger sister, Princess Anne, on a swing while the Queen looked on adoringly.
Charles also added a heartfelt caption from himself and Duchess Camilla to the official Clarence House Instagram account. “Remembering The Duke of Edinburgh today, one year after his death,” it read.
Another photo shows Philip smiling in the years leading up to his death, and a third shows him sitting with the Queen, Charles, and Camilla, all of whom are beaming at each other.
A touching poem by Laureate Simon Armitage was posted alongside the Queen’s video tribute. The following is an excerpt from the poem: “To presume to eulogize one man on such an occasion is to speak for an entire generation – that crew whose survival was always the stuff of minor miracles, who came ashore in orange-crate coracles, fought ingenious wars, finagled victories at sea with flaming decoy boats, and side-stepped torpedoes.
“They unrolled their plans across billiard tables and vehicle bonnets, regrouped at breakfast, husbands to duty. It was anyone’s guess as to what their secrets were, and nobody’s business. From birth, great-grandfathers became the inner core and outer case of a family heirloom of nesting dolls.”
Philip died on April 9, 2021, at the age of 99. The announcement was made by Buckingham Palace in an official statement that read: “Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, with great sadness.
“His Royal Highness died peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning. The Royal Family, like the rest of the world, is mourning his death. In due course, more information will be released.”
Due to COVID restrictions, only 30 people were allowed to attend Philip’s funeral at Windsor Castle, but hundreds attended a larger thanksgiving service at Westminster Abbey last month, including the Queen and the royal family.
